It may be a far cry from NFL stadiums or even the Pop Warner fields their peers play on in the US, but the field at the Camana Bay Sports Complex comes to life each Saturday for the Security Centre Limited Youth Flag Football League.
Enthusiasm of the youngsters fills the air, as do the cheers and shouts of encouragement from coaches and parents on the sidelines. Now in its ninth year, the league is open to boys and girls age 7 and older. This season, the age limit has been increased from 17 to 19.
Some donning the latest sporting gear to go along with their sponsored team jerseys, youngsters suit up for various teams. With each team bearing a sponsor’s name in the title, they’ve also adopted some monikers of storied NFL franchises including Precision Patriots, Walkers Eagles, Security Centre Packers, SRS Steelers, R&R Raiders, Dart Browns, MUFG Chiefs, EFG Lions, Popeye’s Saints, Broadhurst Buccaneers and Maples Titans.
There are even the Burger King Gators resembling the team from the University of Florida, and nicknames not so familiar on the gridiron: Island Air Parrots and Peanuts Pumpers. Regardless of the names on the front of the jerseys, the youngsters mimic the action of their favourite players, who they watch on Sundays during the NFL season. And while there are those who’ve fallen in love with the game over the years and consider themselves hotshots of the turf, there are others who are newcomers to the sport and sharing in the fun nonetheless.
Catch the action Saturday mornings starting at 9:30am. You can also find out more by visiting www.ciffayouth.com.
