Growing up, I was a picky eater. Stepping out of my comfort zone once meant eating tinned tuna or adding onions to a meal. It might then come as a surprise to know that I now manage Camana Bay’s weekly farm-to-table dining experience, The Flavour Tour.
For those of you who have never been on a Flavour Tour, it’s a progressive dinner where guests start with a glass of sparkling wine at West Indies Wine Company and then enjoy four small-plate courses at different restaurants in Camana Bay, walking as a group to each restaurant. Each course is paired with wine or a cocktail and, after dessert, guests return to West Indies Wine Company for a taste of one of their 80 different wines.
As part of my job, I became the host and first food guide of The Flavour Tour. I certainly could not tell any of the chefs that I was too picky to eat this or try that so I swallowed my pride, closed my eyes and dove fork first into each dish served. My inexperienced palate was delightfully surprised. Three years later, I can say without doubt that The Flavour Tour has opened my mind and whetted my appetite for experiencing new and interesting dishes and food combinations. Smoked grouper fritters with ackee and callaloo anyone? Or how about local arugula ravioli stuffed with braised truffle oxtail?
The Flavour Tour is for anyone who likes good food and is willing to try some new things.
Vegetarians are certainly not left out when it comes to The Flavour Tour. One of my absolute favourite dishes is the vegetable lasagna served exclusively on The Flavour Tour and prepared by The Brooklyn Pizza + Pasta. This dish is so surprisingly delicious that guests, who are usually quite chatty and busy enjoying conversation and making new friends while they eat, often fall silent. I guess the saying is true – anyone can cook a hamburger, but it’s best to leave the vegetables to the professionals.
When The Flavour Tour debuted in March 2014, it was meant to be a six-week promotion for the Camana Bay restaurants. To our surprise, the events booked out solid, sometimes with three Tours a night. We quickly realised the gem that we held in our hands and The Flavour Tour became a permanent weekly fixture.
The Flavour Tour is not just for epicureans. As a fun and social dining experience that allows you to sample dishes from four different restaurants in a single evening, it’s for anyone who likes good food and is willing to try some new things. Just ask a one-time picky eater like me!
