The United States likes to celebrate food and drink so much that it has more than 175 days dedicated to particular items. Some of these observances are obscure — like Oatmeal Nut Waffles Day on March 11 and National Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie Day on Sept. 15 — but other days celebrate foods or drinks that are extremely popular.
Two types of an enormously popular food — pizza — will be celebrated on different days in September: National Cheese Pizza Day is on the 5th and National Pepperoni Pizza Day is on the 20th. Other kinds of pizza are celebrated in the U.S. later in the year: National Sausage Pizza Day is Oct. 11 and National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day is Nov. 12. Not to be excluded from celebrating these foods, The Brooklyn Pizza + Pasta restaurant in Camana Bay will offer pizza specials on the days of their U.S. observation in September.
To celebrate the two national pizza days, The Brooklyn will offer 12-inch cheese pizzas at half price on Sept. 5 and 12-inch pepperoni pizzas at half price on Sept. 20. The special prices are offered for dine-in orders only.
The Brooklyn has a varied menu, which, in addition to pizza, offers pastas, sandwiches, salads and entrees made with chicken, beef, fish and lamb; however, pizza is still the restaurant’s biggest seller, says the restaurant’s manager Jeff Stewart.
“Easily half of the orders are pizzas coming out of our wood-fired oven,” he says. “Pepperoni pizza is not only the most popular pizza at The Brooklyn, it’s probably the most popular pizza on the planet. With kids, cheese pizza is the most popular.”
Stewart thinks the wood oven — which is fired with American oak — plays a role in the popularity of The Brooklyn’s pizzas.
“There’s just something about cooking with wood that appeals to people,” he says. “Every culture uses it. Every culture embraces it. It’s authentic.”
Diners don’t have to wait until national pizza days to enjoy specials on pizza. Every Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. guests can get any six-inch pizza on The Brooklyn’s menu along with soup or a salad for CI$13 as part of the restaurant’s Pronto lunch special.
When it comes to pasta, another one of The Brooklyn’s specialities, the U.S. isn’t alone in celebrating: Oct. 25 is World Pasta Day.
Stewart says pasta is also a popular menu choice at The Brooklyn, especially on weekends.
“Pasta is comfort food,” he says. “It reminds people of home. It reminds people of mom. There’s always going to be a place for it.”
