Tarasa Barnett, co-founder of CrossFit Cayman and certified CrossFit Level 1 Trainer, encourages her clients to look for moves that use body weight and target multiple muscle groups. She recommends a great way to get the heart rate up and get stronger is with a series of burpees, a four-part sequence that targets the core, legs, arms, chest and back while using body weight with a mix of cardio to get the heart rate elevated.
Tarasa also loves this move because it can be done anywhere and does not require any equipment. “It’s great for travelling or if you have a limited amount of time and need a quick, intense workout,” she explains. “I recommend challenging yourself to do 50 burpees as quick as you can which will get your heart rate up and activate a variety of muscle groups.”
Follow Tarasa’s guided steps to try this move at home or visit her at CrossFit Cayman, located on Market Street in Camana Bay, for more information on personal and group fitness plans.
Step by Step: Start by standing with your feet together. Squat and put your hands on the ground, hop your legs back into a plank and drop your body to the ground. Press your body up through an aggressive push up back to plank position, hop your feet under your body to land flat on the floor, explode into a jump while you clap your hands. Repeat.
Tarasa’s Tip: Make sure to stay tight, keep your core energised and engaged through the entire exercise.
