Grand Cayman will truly live up to the Department of Tourism’s billing as the culinary capital of the Caribbean in the early part of 2019 as some of the world’s top chefs come to the island to participate in two signature events.
Last month brought announcements of the celebrity chef line-ups for the 2019 Cayman Cookout, to be centred at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, from Jan. 16 to Jan. 20, and for the inaugural KAABOO Cayman, a two-day live music, comedy, culinary and lifestyle experience scheduled for Feb. 15-16.
In addition to Cayman Cookout regulars Eric Ripert and José Andrés, other chefs or culinary celebrities scheduled to make appearances at the Cayman Cookout include Andrew Zimmern from the television show “Bizarre Foods” and Emeril Lagasse, the award-winning Food Network star known for his “Bam!” catchphrase. The Cookout will also feature a quartet of acclaimed female chefs including Emma Bengtsson, Dominique Crenn, Amanda Cohen and Nancy Silverton.
Joining those celebrity chefs is a team of Ritz-Carlton chefs from around the world.
One month later, as part of KAABOO Cayman’s culinary “Palate” offerings, featured celebrity chefs include Michael Mina, Richard Blais, Michelle Bernstein and Nina Compton, the St. Lucian chef who won the 2018 James Beard Award for Best Chef: South for her efforts at the New Orleans restaurant Compère Lapin.
In addition to the celebrity chefs, local chefs Dylan Benoit, Maureen Cubbon, Thomas Tennant, Cody Bush and Anthony Lawson will also take part.
Several of Grand Cayman’s most popular restaurants will serve food and join the Palate line-up, including Agua, Catch, Guy Harvey’s Bar Crudo, Agave, The Wharf, The Brasserie and Grand Old House.
Jason Felts, the chief brand and marketing officer for KAABOO, said one of the event’s key differentiators is its culinary programme.
“Palate is thoughtfully curated to combine the very best local fare mixed with some favourites from abroad,” he said. “This elevated offering aligns nicely with Cayman, which continues to be hailed as the culinary capital of the Caribbean.”
KAABOO Cayman also features music and comedy acts, including The Chainsmokers, Duran Duran, Zedd and Counting Crows plus comedians Wanda Sykes, David Spade, Jenny Slate, Darrell Hammond and many more.
