In June, the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, in conjunction with Baptist Health International/The Miami Cancer Institute, participated in several events to promote lung cancer awareness.
One of the scheduled events was a fashion show called “Just Breathe” on 6 June on the Paseo in Camana Bay. During the fashion show, which raised funds for the benefit of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, models showcased the clothing of Camana Bay shops Sand Angels and Forever Summer.
Other events held during the week included corporate talks presented by Dr. Frederico F. de Souza, a board-certified radiologist at Baptist Health South Florida. One of those corporate talks occurred on 6 June at the Dart offices in Camana Bay.
Among the key take-home messages in the talks encouraging lung cancer awareness were the facts that lung cancer is by far the leading cause of death by cancer among men and women and that only five per cent of those diagnosed with lung cancer will still be alive 10 years later, mainly because the disease is diagnosed too late. However, by undergoing screening with low-dose CT scans, lung cancers may be detected at a much earlier stage that is easier to treat.
Lung cancer screening is offered at Baptist Health International’s diagnostic centre on Smith Road on Grand Cayman. For patients who are uninsured or who are insured but screening is not covered, Baptist Health is offering a special promotional price of CI$235 for the scan.
