The experience of going to the movies in Cayman took a giant leap forward in April.
Over the course of the month, Regal Camana Bay Stadium 6 opened its upgraded VIP auditorium, changed the way people buy tickets and launched an expanded food menu.
The new VIP auditorium features sofa-style reclining chairs with tray tables, a 4k projection system and state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos surround sound. Dolby Atmos is so cutting-edge that it’s generally found only in conjunction with one screen in multiplex cinemas in big cities, said Chase Taylor, a consultant from Alabama who helped install it here.
“These premium VIP auditoriums are all about improving experience,” said Taylor. “The whole idea behind Dolby Atmos is to create an atmosphere where you’re surrounded by audio that you can precisely hear anywhere in the theatre.”
With Dolby Atmos, when a helicopter flies across the screen, moviegoers not only hear it going from left to right or vice versa, but they also hear it flying over their heads from speakers on the ceiling. When it is raining in a movie, Dolby Atmos makes it seem as if it’s raining above your head.
“It’s a 360-degree sound field,” said Taylor. The newly renovated auditorium also features enhanced video projectors that have double the resolution of the other projectors in the cinema.
New movies coming to the cinema will be rotated into the VIP auditorium, just as some movies are rotated through the 3D showings.
Because of the expensive investment in upgrading the auditorium and its reduced capacity due to the reclining seats, a $10 price premium is charged for VIP seating. However, the VIP movie experience goes beyond the improvements made to the auditorium.

“From the moment you get ready to purchase your tickets, the VIP experience begins,” said cinema General Manager Corey Randolph, noting that VIP theatre guests get to choose and reserve their seats. If they do this online, rather than at the cinema, they can bypass the main concession stand and buy their popcorn, candies, sodas or healthy snacks at the private VIP concession.
The VIP auditorium guests aren’t the only people who will enjoy a better experience when visiting the Camana Bay cinema. The original ticket booth, which often saw long lines, has been closed and instead people who don’t buy their movie tickets online now buy them at the concession stand, where they can also buy their popcorn, drinks or other foods at the same time. To facilitate this, the cinema doubled the number of registers from five to 10.
During April, the cinema also began serving an expanded menu of food that includes thin-crust pizza, chicken wings, French fries and a range of child-friendly foods and healthy snacks.
