Situated on a sunny tree-lined corner of Market Street in Camana Bay, Jessie’s Juice Bar’s salt-of-the-earth appeal — from its rustic wooden outdoor tables to its mural-focused creative interiors — captivates many who visit.
Offering a healthy menu — strongly focused on fresh juices as its name suggests — and touting its sustainable business practices, everything about this little juice bar and café speaks to its philosophy of encouraging a healthy lifestyle. The best way to summarise Jessie’s comes from its owner and namesake herself, Jess Ormond: “Jessie’s is a love of food, health and taste.”
Passionate followers of Hippocrates’ renowned philosophy “let thy food be thy medicine,” Jess and her partner Lachie Hewitt opened Jessie’s in 2012 in Camana Bay and experienced such success that in 2014 they opened two other eateries on Grand Cayman. Armed with degrees in nutrition and dietetics, Jess, originally from New Zealand, aimed to spread her love of eating delicious yet nutritious food throughout Grand Cayman.
“The days of ‘it’s healthy, so it must taste bad’ are long gone,” says Jess. “With the growth in the sustainability and farm-to-table movements, people are eating better and it actually tastes better.”
Jess says they are approached often by customers about what to order if someone is trying to lose weight. “The answer is different for everyone, but if you have clear goals and a realistic understanding of your body, anything is achievable. Our focus is on taste as much as health, and we are firm believers that you need to enjoy your food and feel good about what you’re eating, so ask our staff for some suggestions if you aren’t sure.”
The café offers options that are vegan, gluten-free and that fit a Paleo lifestyle, but Jess emphasises that anyone can enjoy these foods, not just those who adhere to a certain diet.
“We are big fans of fermented foods like kimchi and sauerkraut that you will see sprinkled throughout the menu — not only for their amazing health benefits but their unique and addictive flavours.”
Jessie’s Juice Bar also makes home-brewed kombucha, available in several flavours. “Kombucha is an age-old elixir that we have been brewing for six years, but we love people trying it for the first time,” says Jess. “It’s a very refreshing probiotic beverage with a host of health benefits, especially if you are having it in place of soda or alcohol.”
Several other menu items offer diners the option of replacing traditional foods with healthier alternatives, from Jessie’s Life-Changing Bread (a flourless seeded bread) to house-made veggie flax wraps made from fruit and vegetable pulp left over from juicing.
The health benefits can continue at home, as well. Jess encourages budding chefs to, where possible, choose local, organic and seasonal ingredients.
“Keep it simple,” she says. “You really can’t go wrong.”
