The Cayman Islands Kids Gaelic Football Club will introduce the first COOL Camp of 2019 this month with a two-day camp during the school midterm break.
The camp will take place March 7 and 8 at the Camana Bay Sports Complex football pitch. This COOL Camp follows three others held last year that attracted 70 budding young athletes.
Last year’s attendees came from schools across Grand Cayman, with a great mix of nationalities on each team. During the camps, the children learn new Gaelic techniques in both hurling and football. Some children had played in previous Gaelic COOL Camps, while others came from netball, soccer and rugby backgrounds and found it easy to adapt these experiences to Gaelic COOL Camp.
Some of our youth players from these training sessions proved to be so skilled in their play that they participated in the adult corporate mixed 9s event in January this year, with others already signed up for the 2019 Senior Gaelic Football League.
In the COOL Camps, the training starts with a basic warm-up for all players, followed by a quick, exciting game to get everyone familiar with catching and throwing the Gaelic football. The coaching will then move on to learning a couple of specific techniques — like running, passing, kicking, tackling — used in Gaelic football, followed by practice of these new skills in drills. To further develop these practices, a short, fun-orientated game for each age group takes place to challenge the players to incorporate their new skills into the team play environment.
Finally, a competitive game will close the sessions, which last from 8:30 a.m. until noon.
All children aged 6 to 14 are welcome to participate in the COOL Camp and no prior experience is necessary. Indoor facilities are available at Cayman International School in the event of inclement weather, so the camp goes on regardless of weather conditions.
The cost of the camp is CI$70 for the first child and CI$35 per sibling after that. There are also options for those with financial pressures. Registration and payment is required in advance. For any further information, please email [email protected] or visit www.caymangaa.com/kids-club-news/.
