CBT: How long have you been involved with Joel Walton’s Plantation Organics?
JC: I have been working for Joel Walton for 19 years. I started out babysitting his kids, who are all grown up now. About 10 years ago I began helping him sell fruit and fruit trees like custard apples, soursops, breadfruit, guavas and guineps; and coffee from trees he grew in his backyard garden. I wanted to start selling tomatoes, pumpkins and other fruits and vegetables, so he started to plant those as well in his backyard garden. Now I do all of the outside farming.
CBT: What is your favourite task when it comes to the farming aspect?
JC: I love potting all the herbs.
CBT: How fresh is the produce you sell at the Camana Bay market?
JC: We try to sell the produce as fresh as possible, so if we go to market tomorrow, we will pick everything today. Once the produce is ready for picking, we go through the farm to gather the produce for washing in a separate area. Once cleaned, we put them in crates and coolers to be stored overnight in another room. We pack them in the truck the next morning and bring the crates to market.
CBT: What do you love most about your job?
JC: It’s relaxing. I feel free. I just love what I do and I don’t want to do anything else. I like to be outside and talk to people and just sell.
CBT: Even when it rains?
JC: Yes, I’m here rain or shine.
