CBT: What gave you the idea to make skin polishes?
TE: Four years ago, I was making them for Christmas gifts and they were very popular. By February, I was restocking my Christmas gifts and everybody was asking me if they could get more for their friends, family and anybody else
who tried it.
CBT: What products do you sell?
TE: There are three main polishes: Cayman Spice, Soothing Sandz and Lavender Breeze. They are all herbal remedies. Cayman Spice is good for acne, eczema, psoriasis and dry skin in general. Soothing Sandz is good for sore muscles, aches, arthritis pain and joint issues. I have a lot of people with arthritis and inflammation that use that one. Lavender Breeze is for cellulite, burns, insect bites and bad scars because lavender helps break down the scars from the inside. Lavender Breeze is a really good after-bite for mosquitoes and some rashes.
CBT: How do you make the polish?
TE: I make them at home — my son calls me Mama Odie. I’m a witch doctor. It’s all herbs, spices and oils; there are no dyes, perfumes or chemicals. Every jar is done at the house; every jar has exactly what it says.
CBT: What is your favourite product to make?
TE: My favourite one is probably the very first one I made. Cayman Spice Skin Polish; the second one came as an inspiration one day because my mother said to me, “Too bad you can’t come up with something for arthritis.” That’s how Soothing Sandz came about.
CBT: Is Carib Sandz just you?
TE: No, it’s my son, C.J., and me. My son is my business partner; he’s 13 years old now but he’s been working with me since he was nine. He can make every one of these polishes if I’m sick. He can jar them and set them up at the stall. Sometimes he runs the stall on his own; he has his own client base, and they come looking for him. I’ve been homeschooling him and it’s become a part of his week. It’s a family business. Granted, C.J. will be leaving me to go to school and then I’ll be on my own. When he leaves I’ll probably expand Carib Sandz because I won’t be homeschooling him and will have more time.
