The Cayman Islands Society of Human Resources Professionals recognised Dart Enterprises – representing the entire Dart group – for having the best wellness programme in the Cayman Islands at the annual Top Employer Awards gala in December.
Best Wellness Programme is one of the Society’s CAHRE Awards, short for “CISHRP Awards for Human Resources Excellence.” The Society’s website states that the award is designed to recognise the organisation “that has shown real concern for the welfare of its people through providing and promoting a healthy working environment and supporting those with lifestyle or clinical challenge.”
The Dart group offers an extensive wellness programme. Now branded Dart Wellness, the programme involves several health and wellness activities and initiatives each month, including more than a dozen in October alone as part of the company’s “Healthy Workplace Month.”
Juliet Du Feu, Dart Enterprise’s Senior Vice President Human Resources, said the company’s strategic goals encompass long-term and sustainable business success and that wellness plays a big part in attaining that.
“By providing a focus and framework on health and wellness for the company’s employees, we believe that a healthy workforce will be more productive and help ensure our long-term success,” she said.
Dart employees are encouraged to participate at no cost in a variety of running, walking, swimming and biking events; employees are also allowed to bring family members with them to many of these events.
“In 2016, we made the decision to sponsor family members for community wellness events as we recognised that many of these occurred during our employees’ personal time and we wanted employees to be able to participate without impacting time spent with their families,” Du Feu said. “We believe that by educating our employees and encouraging them to include their family members in some of our programmes, this focus on health and wellness will naturally spread within our local community.”
Many of the events chosen for inclusion in the Dart Wellness programme involve community events linked to fundraising for not-for-profit organisations.
“This has helped increase the awareness of our employees to many worthy community-related causes, leading to an increased desire on the part of employees to contribute time and resources,” Du Feu said.
As a part of its wellness programme, Dart also sponsors teams in a variety of sports for staff members, offers free “Lunch and Learn” sessions about nutrition and other wellness topics and sends informative weekly emails about health and upcoming events. It also promotes wellness by offering a $100 reimbursement benefit to staff members for a variety of activities that support good health, including gym memberships, exercise equipment purchases, stress management classes, and weight reduction or smoking cessation programmes.
In addition, Dart employees have access to two free health screenings per year. The first one in 2016 was part of a Health Fair in April for employees that included vendors offering nutrition advice, green juices, vegan foods, and information on Virgin Pulse, the exercise monitoring system that imparts a competitive incentive for staying active, with prizes offered by Dart.
“In developing our wellness programme, a key component is to increase the awareness of our employees to the benefits of healthy lifestyle choices, as well as helping them better manage health-related conditions that already exist,” Du Feu said, adding that Dart Wellness has already resulted in tangible results. “Within a relatively short time frame, employees are already reporting the positive impact and difference our wellness programming is having on their lives, including helping them start a regular exercise programme and increasing their awareness of their current state of health.”
Dart Wellness is overseen by a 13-employee Wellness Committee, chaired by Kelly Fiebig, with Dart HR professionals Marion Wilson-Lindsay and Leif Edwards-Best also playing key roles.
“The Wellness Committee plans and coordinates most of our wellness initiatives,” said Du Feu. “They are creative, dedicated and invested in making the Dart Wellness programme a success.”
