The Camana Bay Cinema is throwing it back to the ‘80s in April. Put on your denim jacket and self-lacing shoes, grab your hoverboard and head to the movies because “Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.”
“Ready Player One” is arguably the standout blockbuster release of the month. Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s 2011-published novel of the same name depicts a dystopian future in which its population takes refuge in a virtual world called the OASIS, a place where you can be whoever you want to be and do whatever you want to do. The movie, like the novel, is filled to the brim with ‘80s pop culture references. The source material references much of Spielberg’s own body of work, the majority of which the director expressed he would be excluding, with one notable exception: the fan favourite DeLorean automobile from 1985’s “Back to the Future.” Exclusions aside, promised is a plethora of Easter eggs — movie slang for jokes or references cleverly hidden in a scene — and crossovers of characters, animated and live-action alike, from various different cinematic universes.
Whether you are a nostalgic adult, someone who is especially keen on the preservation of the decade’s video game culture, or you simply know a kid who would like to see giant monsters tearing down cities, battling it out against military forces, “Rampage,” based on the 1986 arcade game, might be the right escapism for you.
If you are instead looking for a movie on the more tender side, another page-to-silver-screen adaptation is “Love, Simon,” a coming-of-age and celebration-of-self story about first love that will pull at your heartstrings. Other new releases include “Acrimony,” “Blockers,” “Mary Magdalene,” “Traffik,” and “Truth or Dare.”
CLASSICS AT THE CINEMA AND KIDS CLUB
The first classic feature of the month, showing April 3, is 1941’s acclaimed noir “The Maltese Falcon,” starring Humphrey Bogart.
On April 10, go back in time more than 30 years for the film that featured the aforementioned DeLorean, 1985’s classic, “Back to the Future.”
If you are looking for an ‘80s movie sans the sci-fi, “Top Gun” is showing on April 17. See Jane Fonda and Robert Redford as a charming on-screen duo in “Barefoot in the Park” on April 24. As always, Classics at the Cinema are screened in the VIP auditorium and have a ticket price of CI$20, with a small popcorn included.
The Kids Club features for April, showing every Saturday of the month at 10 a.m., include “African Cats” on April 7; “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” on April 14; “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” on April 21; and “Hannah Montana: The Movie” on April 28.
