This month, Camana Bay begins to look a lot like Christmas. One of the Town Centre’s signature traditions is the annual tree lighting, which is also one of the biggest Christmas events on Grand Cayman. This year, the tree lighting takes place on Nov. 17 on the Crescent. With the flick of a switch, 40,000 LED lights on a 38-foot tree decorated with 3,000 ornaments will light up, as will the Christmas lights throughout the Town Centre. The Christmas lights will then remain on in the evenings until early January. A holiday-themed craft market starts things off along the Paseo at 4 p.m. and there will be music, performances and an appearance by Santa Claus.
An important part of the Christmas season for those with kids is being able to take pictures with Santa Claus. Every Thursday starting Nov. 29 and going through Dec. 20., photographers from Picture This Studios will be on hand in Gardenia Court to take pictures of kids with their favourite Christmas hero, Santa Claus. Photo packages start at CI$35.
Christmas is about giving and Camana Bay will host events and initiatives that allow people to give to those less fortunate than they are, and to charitable organisations. The annual Pink Ladies Bazaar, which raises funds for various community needs like the National Council of Voluntary Organisations and the Pines Retirement Home, takes place on Nov. 24 at the Camana Bay Arts & Recreation Centre. The event features homemade baked goods and crafts, teas, performances and a white elephant sale.
On Dec. 16, as part of the annual “Christmas Give” initiative, the Santa Run takes place in the Town Centre. This fun run/walk invites participants to dress in holiday-themed clothes as they help raise money for the Cayman Food Bank, an organisation with a goal of mitigating hunger and malnutrition in the Cayman Islands.
Starting on Nov. 27 and continuing on every Tuesday up until Christmas, Camana Bay will present Christmas-themed movies on a big screen in front of the Christmas tree on the Crescent. These family-friendly films are free to attend.
PARADE OF LIGHTS
On the evening of Dec.1, a fleet of boats of different sizes and shapes will sail into the harbour of Camana Bay for Cayman 27’s annual Parade of Lights. Each boat is uniquely decorated with Christmas lights while music entertains the guests on shore. The boats compete for the prize of most magical boat.
