Grandmothers are well known for having secret recipes that evoke sentimental memories in their grandchildren.
A new cookbook called “Granma’s Recipes” reveals many not-so-secret dessert recipes of the Italian grandmother of Stefano Franceschi, owner of Gelato & Co.
The 30-page hardcover cookbook tells a story about a young girl who is taught by her grandmother how to cook 12 traditional Italian recipes for each month of the year. Stefano’s grandmother Lidia is the inspiration for the cookbook, and many of the recipes in the cookbook were passed down from her.
Stefano grew up in a small village near Reggio Emilia in northern Italy and has fond memories of learning to cook alongside his grandmother as a young boy.
“I grew up with my grandmother, Lidia, and spent most of my childhood around her preparing recipes in the kitchen, so the idea is to inspire kids and parents to cook something genuine from scratch, which is a rare thing nowadays,” Stefano says. “My granma … transferred to me a passion for food, and a belief that we should laugh and enjoy life.”
Some of the desserts in the cookbook are “old-style,” such as rice cake and brick cake, which Stefano says are almost impossible to find in Italian restaurants in this part of the world. One recipe in the cookbook that didn’t come from Stefano’s grandmother is the one for mango jam.
“We have no mango trees in Italy,” Stefano says.
“Plans are in the works for more cookbooks in the future”
The cookbook is illustrated by Stefano’s 24-year-old daughter, Andrea, an artist who graduated from the International School of Comics in Italy prior to moving to Grand Cayman. Stefano says that creating the cookbook with his daughter has allowed them to spend precious time together in a shared project.
Stefano says he hopes the book will encourage adults to spend more time with the children in their lives. He also hopes it shows people that by using fresh ingredients they can “taste the difference” from
