As social calendars get busier towards the end of the year, and the Cayman Islands is no exception, there is still often at least one night of the week when you’re looking for things to do – and going to the movies is always a popular option.
And this is the month to do it: November is the unofficial start of award-season films coming out in general theatres. Following on from often-stellar performances at the big film festivals (Venice, Toronto), it’s now time for these blockbusters to enter the court of public opinion as they begin the campaign trail towards the Dolby Theatre for the Academy Awards on February 24, 2019.
With this in mind, you still aren’t too late to catch A Star is Born, the fourth remake of this epic love story set to the soundtrack of country-rock twangs and Lady Gaga’s powerful vocals. Directed by Bradley Cooper, who also stars, this film is already slated to receive several Oscar nominations, including Best Original Song, Best Director, and Best Actor and Actress in a Leading Role for Cooper and Gaga respectively.
Another musical powerhouse of a film that recently hit the big screen is Bohemian Rhapsody, a Freddie Mercury biopic starring Rami Malek as the renowned Queen frontman, in a performance that many suspect will also see Malek receiving a nomination for a gold trophy.
Also a time where we begin seeing the family-friendly festive films enter the movies, The Grinch premieres in the Cayman Islands tonight, Thursday, Nov. 8, in benefit of the Camana Bay Christmas Give. Proceeds from the film’s ticket sales on this night only will go to the Cayman Food Bank.
Beginning at 6 p.m. this evening, tickets for this special event are CI$15 and available at the Camana Bay Visitor Centre. If you can’t make it out tonight, the film will begin its regular showings from tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 9.
Actress Claire Foy, best known for portraying the young Queen Elizabeth II in Netfix’s immensely popular series The Crown, will take on the role of Lisbeth Salander originally portrayed by Rooney Mara in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Titled The Girl in the Spider’s Web, this film acts as a sequel to Dragon Tattoo, and opens at Camana Bay Cinema tomorrow, Nov. 9.
Harry Potter fans can continue rejoicing in the success of the Fantastic Beasts prequel series, as the latest film from that series will open at Camana Bay Cinema on Nov. 16. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will see Albus Dumbledore work with Newt Scamander to try to thwart Grindelwald’s plans of raising pureblood wizards to rule over all non-magical beings.
Viola Davis leads a powerful female cast in the Steve McQueen-directed Widows, coming out on Nov. 16. When four thieves are killed in a police shootout in Chicago, their widows are left with debts from their husbands’ criminal activities, and decide to pull off the heist their husbands were planning in order to clear their debts and move on with their lives.
Robin Hood and Creed II are both hotly anticipated films, opening Nov. 23. Robin Hood is the first remake of the story since the Russell Crowe film of 2010, and promises faster and slicker action scenes than ever before.
Creed II is the sequel to the popular Michael B. Jordan film of 2015, following Adonis Creed’s boxing career under the tutelage of the famous Rocky Balboa (played again, of course, by Sylvester Stallone).
One interesting release, coming out right at the end of the month, on Nov. 30, in time for the peak season for Christmas films, will be the re-release of Deadpool 2, this time rated PG-13 (a downgrade from its R rating on original release). A lot of the violence and harsh language will be stripped out of the original film to allow for this rating, and the film will apparently act as an homage to The Princess Bride, which featured actor Fred Savage as a young boy being read a bedtime story by his grandfather. In Deadpool 2’s rejig, Deadpool will read the story to Fred Savage (now the grown actor) and will feature other holiday-themed additions not included in the original release.
