We are lucky enough in the Cayman Islands to not have to deal with blizzards and snow days that keep you cooped up inside over the holidays, but that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy any excuse to get to the movies, especially at Christmastime. As the only cinema on the island, Camana Bay Cinema takes this expectation for holiday entertainment seriously and has lined up a variety of new releases, classics, culture performance showings and Kids Club films that will have everyone scheduling at least one or two movie sessions in December.
Elliot The Littlest Reindeer (PG) kicks off December’s new releases, opening on Friday, Dec. 7. This film tells the story of Elliot, a miniature horse who has three days to earn his spot on Santa’s team of reindeer after Blitzen announces his retirement on Dec. 21. This is the perfect film to help amp up the excitement with your little ones – in case they needed any help!
On Dec. 14, three films hit the cinema screens: Second Act (PG-13), Mortal Engines (PG-13) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (PG). This latest installment in the Spider-Man series is an animated version with actor Jake Johnson voicing the title role. If you want to see a Spider-Man film that returns to its beginnings as an animated comic, check this film out. Mortal Engines follows a mysterious young woman, Hester Shaw, as she joins forces with a dangerous outlaw and an outcast from London to lead a rebellion. Second Act sees the much-anticipated return to the big screen as she portrays a big box store worker who works her way into a high-powered Madison Avenue job.
Aquaman (PG-13) and Bumblebee (PG-13) bring action to the big screen just in time for Christmas, releasing on Dec. 21. Aquaman features Jason Momoa in the title role in his first solo feature outside of Justice League, which featured an ensemble of DC Comics heroes. Bumblebee is the latest from the Transformers series, with this installment directed by Travis Knight. Set in 1987, Bumblebee the Autobot is seeking refuge in a small beach town in California, where a 17-year-old girl (played by Hailee Steinfeld) purchases Bumblebee in its form as a VW Beetle as her first car. When she discovers Bumblebee’s true form they help each other find their way in the world.
If you are wondering what to do in the Cayman Islands between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, Camana Bay Cinema has your answer with the opening of Holmes and Watson (PG-13) on Dec. 28. Holmes and Watson brings humour and intrigue to the big screen to perfectly treat that lull that happens between Christmas and New Year. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly play the titular roles, respectively, and jump on the Sherlock Holmes bandwagon with this send-up of the famous detective team in the actors’ first collaboration since the hugely popular Step Brothers.
New releases aren’t the only option this holiday season, either. The popular Kids Club series gets festive in December. Kids Club films are family-friendly and shown with brighter lights and softer sounds every Saturday morning at 10 a.m., at the reduced ticket price of just CI$5. The first two in December are Moana on Dec. 1 and The Muppets on Dec. 8, but starting Dec. 15 are three holiday options: the ever-popular Home Alone, showing on Dec. 15, A Christmas Story on Dec. 22 and The Polar Express on Dec. 29.
If you like live theatre and want to make an event out of going to the movies, you must attend one of Camana Bay Cinema’s Culture at the Cinema events, which feature National Theatre performances broadcasted on the big screen. On Dec. 15, take in The Madness of George III, showing at 8 p.m., or come for a 3 p.m. matinée showing of The Nutcracker on Dec. 23.
Those favouring nostalgia can also enjoy the Classics at the Cinema series, showing every Tuesday at 7 p.m. December’s line-up begins with Cape Fear (1962, R) on Dec. 4, followed by Pretty in Pink (1986, PG-13) on Dec. 11 and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989, PG-13) on Dec. 18.
