In an attempt to combat the dreaded “What’s for dinner?” question, my friends and I decided to turn an evening into an experience with the Teppanyaki menu at Mizu Asian Bistro + Bar. We made reservations two weeks earlier via email and were promptly confirmed for a Wednesday night.
The Teppanyaki menu is hosted outdoors and approaching the table you’re greeted with fairy lights, palm trees and a soothing sea breeze. This intimate dining experience seats 10 people al fresco with stunning water views of the Camana Bay Harbour. The size of the experience also allows for private dining groups; this idea had us planning for future birthdays and celebrations before the meal even started!
We were joined by another small group of four, which allowed for great conversation with new friends over the course of the night. While watching the sunset, we ordered four lychee cocktails from the curated menu. These sweet sips were the perfect end to the workday and start to our delicious culinary experience.
Our chef was Chef Marco of Mizu who introduced our starter of a miso soup and a cucumber wakame salad. The contrasting temperatures and flavours had us excited for what was to come on this four-course menu.
Next up was a personal favourite, Omakase. For those who are not familiar, Omakase is the Japanese phrase that means, “I’ll leave it up to you.” This Japanese tradition allows the chef the creative flexibility to create a truly unique dining experience. With the fire roaring and the conversation flowing, Chef Marco proceeded to manoeuvre the components of our appetiser into a delicious noodle stirfry; the taste was complemented by squeezing lime over the dish for tartness.
You are given your choice of protein for your main course, vegetarian and child portion options are also available, and the course is served with sautéed vegetables, fried rice and the chef’s selection of sauces. A member of our group played an egg toss with Chef Marco; as she threw the egg, he bounced it on his spatula and proceeded to chop it on the stove with extreme dexterity. Our hearts and stomachs were full with laughter and good food as we made our way onto the dessert course.
Our dessert course was comprised of flambéed fruits and vanilla ice cream – the complexities of the sweetness of the fruit alongside the smokiness of flambé was the icing on the cake of a dining experience to remember.
