2019 is finally here, and with a new year comes exciting new releases at Camana Bay Cinema. You should never be at a loss of what to do in the Cayman Islands post-holidays, but especially not with such an action-packed line-up. There are features for every taste, from family-friendly adventures to socially conscious biopics, classic thrillers and contemporary horror. Whether you’re a cinephile with a resolution to see more critically acclaimed films in 2019, or simply looking for a light-hearted flick to ease you back into a post-holiday schedule, January’s lineup has the movie for you.
The month begins with Eli, a spooky story about a boy who becomes trapped in a haunted house while undergoing treatment for a rare disease.
If horror isn’t your thing, mid-month sees Academy Award Nominee Felicity Jones star as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg in a biopic based on the lawyer’s early career, titled On the Basis of Sex. Striking a chord with current events surrounding gender equality, the legal drama delivers a compelling storyline, powerhouse performances, and is guaranteed to leave you thinking.
For more historical fiction with a message, there’s Green Book. In the 1960s, African-American musician Don Shirley hires an Italian-American bouncer to serve as his driver and bodyguard for a concert tour of the Deep South. Through their experiences confronting racism and violence, the two form a bond despite their differences. You can’t go wrong with this movie – it took home the coveted Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award, and boasts high scores from audiences and critics alike.
Families can enjoy an outing to The Kid Who Would Be King, a modern-day retelling of Arthurian legend, while nostalgic adults can relive their youth at Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
Cultural options continue for theatre lovers, with monthly screenings of National Theatre Live stage productions at Culture in the Cinema. This month, Shakespeare comes to the big screen with Simon Godwin’s version of Antony and Cleopatra, starring Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo as the ill-fated lovers.
Classic films also make it back to the silver screen through the weekly Classics at the Cinema programme. Every Tuesday at 7 p.m., travel back into the cinematic archives with classic films like Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, which closes out this month’s schedule.
