As Earth Day approaches and is celebrated on 22 April, climate change continues to drive concern over carbon emissions and, in particular, the adverse effects of vehicular traffic on our planet.

The United Nations first recognised the role of transport in sustainable development in 1992, and in its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, sustainable transport is mainstreamed across several Sustainable Development Goals and targets, especially those related to food security, health, energy, economic growth, infrastructure, and cities and human settlements.

As part of its New Urbanism design, the architects behind Camana Bay have kept the principles of walkability, connectivity and green transportation at the forefront, encouraging more sustainable alternative transportation in an effort to improve sustainability for the well-being of the community and the future of the planet.

Dart Senior Design Manager – Landscape Design & Preconstruction Nicholas Denney has worked on the Camana Bay design portfolio for the last decade. He says the integration of various transportation modes in Camana Bay's infrastructure predates his tenure at Dart.
“Although I was not part of the original design idea, the team’s work [from the beginning] speaks to a thoughtfulness surrounding the overall network for users. It can be seen in the Camana Bay Design Guidelines,” he says.

In the Camana Bay Design Guidelines, it states that the Town Centre design prioritises walking and biking within the community and routes should be “comfortable, safe and attractive.”

Denney says, “The [bicycle and pedestrian] pathways [in Camana Bay] also support our notion of ‘live, work, play’ as persons can use these routes to commute, exercise and enjoy their daily lives.”

Designated pathways
As you stroll through the Town Centre, the distinct textures beneath your feet might initially seem like an aesthetic choice. However, a closer look reveals a thoughtful design choice: The distinct textures delineate the walking and bike paths.

For instance, the bike pathways are paved with sleek grey pavers, while the walking paths seamlessly alternate between sturdy concrete and warm brown pavers. Additionally, clear signage further indicates the designated bike paths, ensuring a smooth and safe journey for cyclists.

Third-party companies have also contributed to this vision by offering bike and electric scooter rental services around the Town Centre. The integration of shared mobility services further enhances the accessibility and flexibility of Camana Bay's transportation network, encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore the area while minimising their environmental footprint.

Not only is embracing these modes of transportation encouraged, but visitors are also reminded to prioritise the use of appropriate protective gear.

Varied routes provide “hidden gems”
Denney says that Camana Bay continually explores opportunities to extend its current networks whenever possible. He also shares his personal recommendations when commuting around the Town Centre.

“Given the variety of courtyards and pedestrian routes, I seek to try a different sequence with every walk. One is certain to find a hidden gem incorporated by the amazing designers of Camana Bay with every exploration. This may be an architectural feature, a fountain, a sculpture, a detail or maybe a new plant in bloom,” he says.

As the global community reflects on the urgency of environmental stewardship this Earth Day, Camana Bay's dedication to green infrastructure stands as a testament to the transformative impact of sustainable urban planning. In the push toward a more sustainable tomorrow, Camana Bay’s vision extends beyond mere urban planning; it embraces a holistic approach that not only fosters environmental stewardship but also promotes a culture of active living and healthy lifestyles.
